I like the vibrant colors from watercolors. I find controlling the brush and the colors to be the most difficult part about watercolors. In this painting i used one point perspective. I took the photo in Downtown Hendersonville. My Grandparents live near there and when my sister and i were younger they would take us to the Mast General Store and we could fill up a bucket with candy for them to buy. I found that staying in the lines was really difficult though. I thought that painting from the children's book and the brush control warm-ups were the most helpful warm-ups.
The place I painted is actually Niagara Falls, right before the water falls. A lot of my family lives up in Buffalo and we go to Niagara Falls whenever we go up there and it's always been my favorite place. I think the water is where I had the most trouble. I had trouble with getting it to look realistic. I like the grass in my painting the best. The grass and the trees were the most fun to do, and I think they turned out looking the most realistic out of everything in the painting.
In the process of painting, I started by laying down basic colors over the red on the canvas. Then I started adding more details to the background (sky). I then moved onto the mid ground (water), which took up most of the time in class. I started by adding different blues in the water and painted in the trees, then I added the white splashes and foam over top. Then I moved onto the foreground (grass), where I laid different shades and tones of green over top one another, then a added in the flowers. I don't currently have a picture of the piece so I'm adding it later.
For my inspired artist i chose Steeven Salvat. He is a French artist who creates detailed illustrations of animals, machines, and fruit using a rotring pen and hatching techniques. Right now, he is working in Paris, although he comes from Menton, a city in southern France. When i first saw his work, I was instantly drawn to the the typewriters and sewing machine because my grandparents collected old machines just like those, and they would always be around their house. As a kid, i had been inspired by those same machines and had attempted to draw a few. granted, i was seven so they didn't look near as good as Steeven Salvat's art, but it did instantly bring me back to the times where i tried to draw similar things. My grandmother also had a bird watching book with different kinds of birds that she gave to me to practice drawing when I was eight. So when I saw these drawings I was instantly reminded of my old inspiration as an artist. I was also fascinated that he could get such amazing detail with pen, and not to mention he is self taught!
